Avoid unnecessary blindness. Give people a chance at a better life.
The Eye Care Foundation helps prevent and cure unnecessary blindness and visual impairment in developing countries. Worldwide there are 253 million people with a visual disability. 36 million of these people are blind, 217 million are partially sighted. As many as 89% of people with visual impairments live in a developing country. In developing countries, blindness leads to major economic and social problems. Blind people can usually no longer work themselves and depend on family members and friends. 75% is preventable or curable; for example, by cataract surgery or good prescription glasses. It can be that simple, but without the help of you as a donor it is impossible to achieve this.
Eye Care Foundation
Eye Care Foundation was born out of the need to provide support from the Netherlands to establish and strengthen good and affordable eye care in developing countries.
Initially, this mainly happened through the deployment of ophthalmic teams. Support has shifted to strengthening local capacity by enabling training, improving infrastructure by building eye clinics and donating ophthalmic equipment. For example, we are working on sustainable eye care. The support of Eye Care Foundation is aimed at the poorest of the poor for whom good medical care is unreachable or unaffordable. Eye Care Foundation has projects in the Himalaya region (Nepal), Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos) and in Africa in Tanzania, Rwanda and Zambia.
Support is most successful if networks of eye centers develop in these regions with well-trained, local staff, volunteers, appropriate equipment and good housing. The goal is to promote these networks through our project support. Over time, the networks must be able to maintain themselves financially and in terms of their level of knowledge. Embedding in local policy is important here in order to guarantee continuity and quality.
General support and medical management is provided to the project partners from the Netherlands and via the field offices in Nepal, Vietnam and Cambodia. It enables the local partners to increasingly organize and carry out the necessary eye care on their own.
